IFA Urges Senate To Act On Small Business Lending Bill

The International Franchise Association has urged the Senate to include a substitute amendment to the Small Business Lending Fund Act (H.R. 5297) that extends important provisions first enacted by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and modernizes the Small Business Administration (SBA) loan programs to make them accessible to more franchise businesses.

"Nearly half of IFA members, who operate across more than 90 industries that create 21 million jobs and generate $2.3 trillion in economic activity, indicated that access to capital is the most pressing issue they face in 2010.," said IFA Vice President of Government Relations David French in a letter to all members of the Senate. "Updating and improving the SBA loan programs so that more franchise business owners can obtain the necessary start-up capital will create jobs and help lead our economy on a road to recovery."

French said the amendment, offered by Sens. Baucus (D-Mont.) and Landrieu (D-La.) will increase the maximum loan amounts for the SBA 7(a) program to $5 million and for the 504 program to $5.5 million. An increase in lending has a direct impact on the number of jobs created. According to IFA's recently updated Small Business Lending Matrix and Analysis, for every incremental $1 billion in lending, franchised businesses can create 40,400 jobs and $4.2 billion in economic output.

"Given the extreme difficulty many current and aspiring entrepreneurs are facing in this economy, this increase will allow more individuals to access the capital they need to maintain existing jobs, while also creating new job opportunities, " French said. "We urge the Senate to support the Baucus-Landrieu amendment before time runs out for this congressional session."

Clearfield, UTAH (ABC 4 News) - Police need you to take action and help them catch a man who allegedly robbed a Baskin Robbins Sunday.

At about 4:30 p.m. the suspect came into the shop at 435 South State Street in Clearfield.

According to officers, he showed a knife and asked for all the money in the register.

Police said the suspect is between 5’7 and 5’9 tall and in his 20’s.

To get into the 4-door sports car he drove, the suspect had to open his door through the window.

Employees said the car also has noticeable damage and primer on the door.

Glen Bell, a former Marine, began the chain with his first restaurant in San Bernardino, California. He named it Bell's Drive-in. Glen Bell was 23 when he left the Marine Corps in 1946. When he was building up the pizza franchise chain Domino’s, he lived in a trailer and put in 100-hour workweeks. When he had money, he bought a fleet of high-end cars, an island, and the Detroit Tigers.

But when Monaghan, a Catholic, decided in midlife that he wasn’t being Catholic enough, he turned his zeal away from earthly goods -- and sold them off, often at a loss -- to focus on one thing: “To get as many people into Heaven as possible,” as he told the Wall Street Journal in 2006.

It could be called an obsession. Giving to extant Catholic charities wasn’t going to do it -- he wanted big numbers. And the best way to do that, he told the Wall Street Journal, was to produce the teachers, priests, and administrators who could form pliable young Catholic minds.

The road has been anything but smooth. After establishing Ave Maria College in Ypsilanti in 1998, and then a Catholic law school, the Ave Maria School of Law, in Ann Arbor in 2000, Monaghan’s plans hit a speed bump. The town of Ann Arbor decided that it wouldn't change its zoning laws to allow the school to expand to a full-size campus on Monaghan’s property called, appropriately enough, Domino Farms (you knew pizzas grew on farms, right?). Not one to be put off a grand plan, Monaghan signed a deal in 2002 with developer Barron Collier Companies to partner in building an entire town -- a Catholic town -- in Florida. Barron Collier offered up the land, and Monaghan committed $100 million to the partnership deal and brought the university that would be a centerpiece of the new town. They officially broke ground in February 2006.

With Grand City Property, she said, Domino's has found a partner who has "not only the financial part of the equation but also very strong operational expertise and a solid history of operating in Germany."

Michael Lawton, executive vice president of Domino's Pizza International, referred to Germany, with nearly 41 million households, as a market that offers a "great opportunity" for pizza delivery.

Franchise analysts agree. Felix Peckert, a Bonn-based franchising consultant, expects between three and five large pizza delivery companies with about 3,000 to 5,000 franchise partners to dominate the home delivery market within the next 15 years. The big competitors, he said, will force many of the smaller pizza delivery companies out of business and many of the smaller pizzerias to drop their delivery service and focus instead on their dining and takeout services.

In a Tuesday press briefing, Ba U Shan-Ting, chief operating officer of Domino's Pizza Singapore, announced the rollout of the tracking services, which is now available on its Malaysia and Singapore Web sites.

GPS Tracker, short for "Great Pizza Service" Tracker, is an online portal that lets customers know if their pizza is being prepared, baked, boxed, packed or already on its way, Ba U said. The service does not actually tap GPS (global positioning system) technology.

The Web service, paired with Domino's Pizza's 30-minute delivery promise, aims to offer better customer service by providing greater insight into the progress of their pizza order allowing them to better manage their time before it is delivered, he added.

In the simplest type of arrangement, you can own and operate a single unit franchise at one specific location, or within a specified territory for a home-based franchise business. Most individual owners start with one unit.

McDonald's Franchise Still Profitable?

McDonald's franchise has been one of the world's most successful big companies during this recession. On Monday, the fast-food giant posted February sales results that most chains would envy.

But the worsening global economy has McDonald's preparing for a more difficult year. The strengthening U.S. dollar is knocking the wind out of McDonald's profit-generating power. While Americans are flocking to McDonald's as a cheap alternative to sit-down meals, that's not the case in some parts of Europe and Asia.

How McDonald's franchise tackles these challenges falls to Ralph Alvarez, a Cuban-born former accountant who is McDonald's president and chief operating officer. Mr. Alvarez, 53 years old, has helped the Golden Arches extend a six-year success streak with his focus on improving restaurant operations, adjusting prices and keeping down costs. He is widely expected to succeed Chief Executive Jim Skinner once the 64-year-old retires.

Mr. Alvarez is pruning gas-guzzling cars from the company fleet, pressing media buyers to negotiate lower advertising rates and putting the brakes on building new outlets on street corners where nearby development shows signs of weakness. At the same time, he's overseeing big investments in the most promising aspects of McDonald's business -- coffee drinks that compete with Starbucks and improved drive-through windows that increase sales and efficiency. To check on operations, he disguises himself in a baseball cap and sunglasses and visits McDonald's outlets unannounced.

In February, McDonald's franchise same-store sales world-wide increased 5.4%, after stripping out a calendar shift from last year's leap year. By that measure, U.S. same-store sales rose 6.8%, while sales in Europe increased 4% and rose 4.1% in the region that includes Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.

Sharon Holbrook bought the Elk Grove franchise Jan. 31 and expects to begin offering services by April 1. She owned a gift shop before commuting to Safeway’s corporate office in Pleasanton for 14 years. A manager at Borders in Davis for the last year, she ended a two-year hunt for a franchise opportunity with the Cybertary deal in January.

The new Cybertary franchise will offer bookkeeping, project management, newsletters and other services for small businesses and other clients.

Denny's Franchise Free Breakfast Feeds 2M People

Denny's 1,600 chain restaurants across North America, Puerto Rico and Canada, were slammed for eight hours Tuesday with hungry patrons standing on sidewalks for nearly two hours to take advantage of the $5.99 "Grand Slam Breakfast" giveaway.

Denny's, a dining chain with annual revenue of about $900 million, has advertised in a TV commercial Sunday during the Super Bowl XLIII that it would give away its signature breakfast from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. local time Tuesday, at all its restaurants in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, while supplies lasted.

Denny's Diner has promoted the iconic dish giveaway heavily, with a bold 30-second appeal ad that aired during the third quarter of the Super Bowl 43 on Sunday, plus another 15-second ad during the post-game show, offering a free breakfast to some 90 million viewers. In addition, it has placed a full-page ad in USA Today's Monday edition. The promotion was further announced on The Today Show and notices were also sent out to the chain's "Denny's Breakfast Club" members.

The NBC ad, which was bought to unveil a new promotion for customers squeezed by the recession, may have cost as much as $3 million, said Nelson Marchioli, CEO of Denny's Corp. Super Bowl XLIII's 30-second commercial time slot costs $2.4 million–$3 million for the airtime alone, excluding production and talent costs.

The game was televised live by the US NBC Sunday Night Football and Canada's CTV Television Network. BayTSP has reported that, "as of 10 a.m. Wednesday, commercials that initially aired during NBC's Super Bowl XLIII broadcast subsequently had been watched online more than 28 million times."

"The promotion has a total cost of $5 million U.S., which includes $3 million for the commercial on NBC," said a Denny's spokesman, noting also that the company received about $50 million in news coverage, most of which was positive. According to a Denny's representative, two million people walked through the restaurant chains’ doors Tuesday, and each Denny’s restaurant served an average of 130 Grand Slams per hour.

To jump-start plans for a nationwide chain of Mr. Clean Car Wash franchises, P&G in December acquired the franchise assets of Atlanta-based Carnett's Car Wash, which has 14 locations.
"We need to look for new opportunities to allow us to grow," says Bruce Brown, P&G's chief technology officer. "That isn't limited to things within our current business model." P&G is under mounting pressure to find new sources of revenue growth, particularly as more cash-strapped shoppers think twice about buying its premium-priced products. Wall Street is increasingly skeptical that the mammoth company can garner meaningful gains in its slow-growing product categories and a tough economy.

Known for exhaustively testing new ideas, Procter & Gamble has been quietly experimenting with service businesses in recent years. Since 2007, it has operated two Mr. Clean Car Washes near its Cincinnati headquarters. Last year, it unveiled three Tide dry-cleaning shops in Kansas City, Kan., area. Also in 2007, P&G said it bought a minority stake in membership-based medical services firm MDVIP, based in Boca Raton, Fla.

Professional car washing, which rings up about $35 billion in sales a year in the U.S., according to P&G estimates, won out as the company's first major franchise push. "We want to blow this out to a national network of car washes," Mr. Brown says.

The car-washing business has a handful of competitive advantages, says Nathan Estruth, vice president of P&G's FutureWorks, which develops new business ventures. It lacks a dominant national chain, aging baby boomers are reluctant to wash cars themselves and more water-strapped communities are pushing professional car cleaning as a conservation measure.

Forming a franchise system, rather than owning locations, means "we don't have to enter a capital-intensive business," he says.
